# Activity 3

Explore patterns on the 100 square

Talk about: Which digit changes when you add or subtract 1? Which digit changes when you add or subtract 10?

Using a 100 square and coloured pencils look for patterns and discuss what they see.

What happens to the numbers when you go down a column? Are there any patterns if you go down a diagonal line? Colour all the numbers with a zero in, does it make a pattern? Colour all the numbers with a five in, does it make a pattern? etc.

To practise the skills covered in the Activity 1 and Activity 2 write number questions that include 1 more, 1 less, 10 more, 10 less for your child to answer

e.g.

24 + 10 = ?

49 - 1 = ?

13 + ? = 14

76 - ? = 66

It is important to vary the position of the missing number.

Ask your child to find the missing number in the number questions. They might find it helpful to use the 100 square to help with this.

To further practise -1, +1, -10 and +10 work together on the Calculating Caterpillars problem solving challenge. Good luck!
