Rhiwbeina Primary Active Travel Challenge

Rhiwbeina Primary School has chosen to be part of an exciting nationwide challenge to encourage children to travel actively to school. This means walking, cycling, or scooting to school. WOW is run by a charity called Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking, and has been funded by Cardiff Council Active Travel Schools Team.

Children will record how they travel to school each day, and will be rewarded with a recycled, sustainable badge if they travel actively to school 3 times in a week for a month. They can collect the badges over the year. There will also be a trophy for the class which travel actively to school the most each month.

What are the benefits of travelling actively to school?

  • Improved Mental Health
  • Healthier (NHS recommends 60 mins of exercise per day for 5–11-year-olds)
  • Reduces car congestion
  • Reduces pollution
  • Improves concentration at school
  • Cheaper
  • Less car accidents

What if you cannot travel actively to school?

If you live too far from the school or don’t have time to walk the whole way to school, we recommend ‘park and stride’ to help your child earn their WOW badge. Park (or jump off public transport) 10 minutes away from the school and walk, cycle, or scoot the rest of the way. If you or your child have a disability which may prevent you from this, please contact your school leader for advice.
