Year 5


In year 5 you will have the opportunity to learn all about a number of great history topics. These include The Titanic, The Stuarts and The Coal House. All of these will keep you enthralled for weeks! Also not forgetting our other excellent topics, Higher, Faster Stronger (Olympics), Lights Camera Action (Movie making) and the one you will all love, Survival (Shelter building).

A brilliant trip in Year 5 for our budding Welsh speakers is a trip to West Wales, Llangrannog. On this excellent break you will have the opportunity to try your hand at a number of activities, including horse riding, archery, quad-biking, beach-combing and climbing. Also in year 5 you will have the opportunity to help the younger children by becoming Young Leaders, which all the children have enjoyed since it started. Pupils in year 5 are also actively involved in the Eco Committee and School Council.

Here are our topics in year 5...

Lights, Camera, Action!

  • This is your opportunity to become a film producer!
  • You will create your own space animation: make your space alien; compose a film score; add sound effects; and write your script.
  • Will your group win a coveted Oscar on your Oscar day?
  • Dress up for the Oscars and view all your films

Coal House

You will explore this topic within a mining family- experiencing all the hardship and frustration of miners and their families as they attempt to make a decent living in Trehafod, despite wage cuts, strikes and disaster!

Faster, Higher, Stronger

  • In this topic you will be able to learn about the ancient and modern Olympic Games.
  • You will take part in different events during a special ‘Olympic day’. Will you be victorious?  
  • You will also have the chance to become a budding news reporter, learn about the human body and discover about the many excellent sporting facilities that we have in Cardiff.
  • Visit : Swalec Stadium

King and Country

  • This topic looks at Stuart history through the eyes of your intriguing character! 
  • Journal writing and secret messages will also be on the agenda for all.
  • In this journal you will be encouraged to use Stuart language, which will make it all the more interesting for people to read. 
  • Become a Pikeman for the day or a Musketeer depending on your preference. Fight for King or Country, YOU DECIDE!

Secrets of the Deep

  • Explore the Unsinkable Titanic! Become a member of the crew or passenger.
  • Why was this ship so magnificent? What went horribly wrong on that fateful day? 
  • Design a moving book; produce your own Water Music & complete the Signal Challenge.
  • Just some of the exciting challenges that await you when you explore the Secrets of the Deep...
  • Visit Cilfynydd for a river study.


  • This is a fantastic outdoor topic one we are sure the children will enjoy.
  • We will be shelter building in the Wenallt which will test all the children’s teamwork skills.
  • As well as this we will be orienteering around the school and Cosmeston Country Park. the children will be having a number of associated lessons at the site including Music, Language, Mathematics and Art. 
  • Also in year 5 we will be embarking on a geographical trip to the village of Wick in the Vale of Glamorgan.
  • Visit : Tinkinswood and build a shelter!
